Super Berry—Superfood
Prized for their high antioxidant properties, blueberries are the top pick amongst all the superfoods. They have the most antioxidants per serving when compared to cranberries, strawberries and raspberries. Recent studies show that blueberries are bursting with an important antioxidant called anthocyanidin. Anthocyanins are the red/blue pigments that give blueberries their deep indigo color, as well as the ability to help neutralize free radical damage in the body, which may help reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. Adding blueberries to your diet can have many sweet rewards including:
- cardiovascular support
- healthy cholesterol levels
- nighttime vision improvement
- protection against macular degeneration
- brain and memory boosting properties
Picking the Best of the Bunch
Look for berries that are plump, firm and deep indigo in color. Avoid berries that are shriveled, dull in color and soft or squishy. The whitish gray “bloom” should be uniform over each berry and the berries should be dry to the touch. Examine all sides of the container to ensure a perfect pint of berries!
Store fresh berries in the refrigerator and rinse just before eating. This keeps the “bloom” intact, which protects the berries from spoiling too quickly. For the sweetest, juiciest berries, enjoy within 3 to 5 days of purchase. Be careful when leaving fresh berries out on the counter during warm weather months, they will deteriorate quickly in the heat!
Frozen for Freshness
Fresh berries can be frozen and enjoyed later. Simply rinse berries and discard any old or shriveled berries. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet to ensure uniform texture, freeze until frozen and place in a plastic freezer bag. Label the bag with the date and amount of berries. This is handy when thawing berries for your favorite muffin, tart, pie and pancake recipes. TIP: When using frozen berries for baked goods, keep them frozen for full berry flavor.
