Preparing for summer?
Homeopathic remedies to have on hand

Henry's Nutritionist, Janet Little, shares her must-have list of homeopathic remedies every house should have on hand this summer.

Springtime is already here and summer is just around the corner. This year be prepared for any summer mishaps by stocking your medicine cabinet with homeopathic remedies.

What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy has been around longer than Hippocrates. It seeks to cure in accordance with natural laws of like cures like. Homeopathy was “discovered” in the early 1800s by a German physician, Samuel Christian Friedrich Hahnermann. Hahnermann became disillusioned with the medical practices of bledding, cauterized, blistered, and purging of patients in the Eighteenth and nineteenth-century. Hahnermann left his medical practice in pursuit of exploring the world of homeopathy.

The Law of Similars:
The term of homeopathy comes from the Greek homoios (similar) and pathos (Suffering or sickness). The fundamental law of homeopathy is based on the laws of similars, or like cures like; therefore, the law states that a remedy can cure a disease if it produces in a healthy person the symptoms similar to those of the disease.

Remedies to stock:

Arnica – Prevents shook and the sore bruised feeling that occurs after an accident, fall, blow or injury. Use first, and then if needed use Ruta grav or Rhus tox.

Ruta grav – Helps with sprains to the wrist and ankle, specifically the torn and wrenched tendons and ligaments. Also helpful in the dislocation of the shoulder and tennis elbow. Feel sore and stiff. May feel worse when lying down and in cold, wet weather.

Rhus tox – Overexertion when did not limber up first. Useful for torn ligaments and tendons in sprains and strains. Pains are worse when beginning to move, but feels better once moving. Called the “Rusty Gate”. Better from motion.

Ledum – Good for sprained wrist/ankle. Also good for puncture wounds from sharp objects and bites from rats, cats and mosquitos. Area of sprain or wound feels cold, and is better by using cold applications, worse from warm applications.

Apis – Always call your doctor if there is a severe allergic reaction. Severe reactions to bee/wasp/jelly fish stings, where there are red and puffy (not hard), hot, tense swellings with burning, stinging pains and itching. Person feels restless. The area is worse form heat and from hot applications.

Arsenicum album – Food poisoning. Vomiting and diarrhea together. Extreme weakness and disability, yet restless, anxious fearful and irritable. Extremely chilly, but wants the window open. Thirsty for sips of warm water. Burning pains.

Nux vomica – Good for car sickness. Great sensitivity to the least movement or noise. Constant nausea. Wants to vomit, but can’t. Constipation. Very chilly. Splitting headache. From over indulgence of food and drink. Irritable.

Cantharis – Use burn ointment. The area of the burn is red. A burning sensation is experienced. Can use a 6C potency every 15 minutes till pain has lessened. Repeat if pain returns.
